        WOMEN EMPOWERMENT
Status of Women in the target area :

Women from almost half the population in our country. Though our constitution guarantees equal rights and equal opportunities to both men and women, visible and invisible inequalities and inequities bases on gender persist. The report of the National Committee on the status of women in India towards equality highlighted the process of the declining status of women and pointed out that this deterioration has accelerated for the last three to four decades. The Committee has also mentioned several other disturbing trends about the status of women such as disparity in access to health care and medical services, financial dependency, and lack of accesses to get financial assistance increasing gap between men and women in literacy, education and training for employment etc. There are several other unfortunate tendencies that have been conspicuous in India regarding woman’s status such as decreasing sex ratio, increasing female infanticide and female foeticide. Malnourishment and undernourishment among girls and women, due to lower consumption of essential nutrients by girls and women and therefore proneness to diseases, higher maternal mortality rates in the lower age groups, because of inadequate health care and medical services.

India is a land of villages and it is a fact that the plight of a rural women is far worse that of urban women. In rural areas along with taking care of the household, women perform several activities both inside and out side the house which from part of agricultural production process, such as sowing, seeding, weeding, transplanting, harvesting, processing, marketing etc. The Poverty elevation is one of the Primary objectives of any country’s planning. Therefore it becomes imperative to formulate situation specific Poverty elevation policies and programs for generation of a minimum level of income for the Rural Poor.

Implies it in participation is empowerment to transfer of power to the people empowering is a development of skills and abilities of people, to enable them to manage better have say in or in associate with existing development delivery system. Some see more fundamental and essential concern with enabling people to decide upon and under take action, which believe or essential to their development. Development then is human development that enhances the participation and empowerment of the people. It has not only to do with policies and programs, but feelings, preferences and needs of people.

WITHOUT ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT, THE DEVELOPMENT OF WOMEN IS AN EMPTY PROMISE. PLANS, POLICIES, LEGISLATIONS AND LAWS PROVIDE ONLY THE PHILOSOPHICAL BLUE PRINT FOR DIRECTING THE PROGRESS OF SOCIETY. TRANSLATED INTO PRACTICAL TERMS, THESE PLANS FRUCTIFY ONLY WHEN WOMEN RECEIVE ECONOMIC POWER IN THEIR HANDS. THE STATUS OF WOMEN IS INSTANTLY UPLIFTED WITH ECONOMIC INDEPENDENCE. THE FACT IS IMPLEMENTING SOCIO-ECONOMIC PROGRAMS FOR THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF RURAL AND NEEDY WOMEN ACROSS THIS AREA.

The subject of women’s empowerment is deeply rooted in the globally determined and accepted goals of equality, development and peace for all women empowerment building capacity of women families, communities and institutions for restoring women’s control over their own lives and destiny. Operationally, women empowerment calls for creating a political, economic and social environment which enables their equal access to control over the means that are critical for leading socio-economically productive and healthy lives.

   Women SELF-HELP GROUPS
Building Up Rural Indian Women and Alleviating Poverty. Nearly 40% of India's population of a billion plus lives in poverty. In India, we find that many are poor because of one simple reason — 'lack of regular income'. To add to their miserable plight, over 90% of the rural poor are deep in debt. Unable and unwilling to access banks or to apply for loans, the poor turn to local moneylenders, who charge 60% to 120% interest (per annum) or even more, trapping the poor into extreme poverty. Micro Enterprise Development is a proven way to strengthen viable, small businesses, resulting in increased household income and savings, and thus alleviating the crunch of economic poverty. FACT works alongside enterprising members, helping them realize their economic potential and proving that they have the capacity to build their own, small Micro Enterprise units. FACT facilitates the formation of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to save, share and build capacity. Small loans for the businesses are provided and collected through individual members in SHGs. Small loans (ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 10,000) are provided for individuals in SHGs, along with training on management, marketing and investments. As a result of such economic development initiatives, many small businesses expand and become viable. As a result, poor families have enough to feed their children and send them to school. The marginalized poor develop their businesses and manage to live a decent life. This approach is very powerful in lifting communities from economic poverty, ultimately leading the community to be self-reliant and live with dignity. So far FACT had established 150 Women Self-Help groups in our Villages and consisting of 2,250 Women members.

   DAIRY SCHEME
FACT has been implementing Dairy Schemes in our villages. We have selected women beneficiaries from poorest of the poor. FACT had provided Two Milch Cattle for each woman. At first we give one Milch Cattle and after 6 months we provide another Milch Cattle so both animals will give milk regularly through out the year. The families will get regular income through this income-generating program. Through this scheme FACT has covered 200 women members in various villages.
